Centennial Trail Medallions
Celebrate the community members whose engraved bronze medallions helped build the Spokane River Centennial Trail and preserve their legacy for generations to come.
Honoring the Legacy of Spokane River Trail Supporters
Thousands of generous individuals, families, and organizations purchased Miracle Mile Medallions in the late 1980s and early 1990s to help raise funds for building the Spokane River Centennial Trail. These bronze medallions were embedded in the trail’s concrete to commemorate loved ones, honor special events, and celebrate accomplishments.
This living “donor wall” raised more than $300,000 for construction and symbolizes the heart of our community. Each medallion represents a story of support, celebration, and community pride.
History of the Medallion Program
-
1980s–1990s: More than 3,600 medallions were installed along the trail, primarily downtown between the First Interstate Center for the Arts and Gonzaga University’s Don Kardong Bridge. Over 200 were also placed at the Mirabeau Trailhead in Spokane Valley.
-
Purpose: For a $100 donation, supporters were promised one square foot of the Centennial Trail for life. Donors’ names, messages, or dedications were engraved, creating a permanent reminder of their role in bringing the trail to life.
-
Community Impact: Medallions were given as gifts, memorials, and celebrations, turning the trail into a timeline of personal and regional history.
Continuing the Legacy
Friends of the Centennial Trail remains dedicated to honoring the donors and families who helped build this beloved 40-mile regional treasure. While vandalism and maintenance have challenged the original installation, the spirit of the program lives on in the thousands of names and inscriptions recorded.
We invite you to enjoy the trail, use the medallion search tool, and support the ongoing stewardship that keeps the Centennial Trail thriving for future generations.
